O Little Town of Bethlehem
Happy Hollandaise! (1995)
ukelele, lap steeI, bass, tepid conga
This is a flagrant example of bitonality, in this case Bb and F. The melody is played in both keys via parallel fifths. The ukelele plays harmony in a 6/8 pattern alternating between chord tones of each key, creating the hoped-for ambiguity. The second time through the bass enters playing the chord roots of both keys (in 3/4 for added tension). By far the most difficult part to play was the ukelele. I don't know how many takes I recorded before getting all the way through it without making a mistake. Very tedious indeed!
