This seminar will consider a number of approaches to research in music and culture, including both fieldwork-based research typical of ethnomusicology and archival-based research typical of musicology. The aim of the course is for students to gain insight into these approaches, and to think in more creative and flexible ways about their own research projects.
Abstract: A standard is a song that has transcended its original heyday, a song whose words and music every professional musician and singer is supposed to know. Standards have a variety of origins from film to Broadway to Tin Pan Alley, and each has a unique history. This paper examines the origins of the Tin Pan Alley standard Who's Sorry Now?
